Industry’s response

Industry's historic and, quite frankly, surprising response

When we launched our campaign on CNN last monday we were expecting a response from industry. The day after our launch, industry put forward Joanna Scott of the Global Issues Group of the chocolate association, to tell the industry’s side of the story on CNN’s Quest Means Business. It was, if anything, quite a surprising conversation.

“What we’re doing is not enough”, an historic admission of failure

Up till now, industry's response has been quite predictable; "we're doing a lot, we have good goals". What we weren’t expecting, however, was a blanket admission of failure. But an admission is pretty much what we got. A pretty historic one at that! Admitting to speak on behalf of industry, Ms. Scott’s interview was rife with admissions of failure. When faced with the assertion that not enough has been done, Ms. Scott admitted: “You’re absolutely right. The progress isn’t enough”. She continued stating “We have to do more.” Probably the most damning statement of the programme did not come from CNN’s interviewer, but from Ms. Scott herself, when she said that “What we’re doing is not enough… we do need to do more."
